In our modern world, our skin is not just battling the natural aging process; it's constantly exposed to a variety of digital and environmental stressors. From the blue light emitted by our screens to pollution in the air we breathe, these factors can accelerate skin aging, cause inflammation, and weaken the skin barrier. Standard Self Care's advanced skincare formulations are designed to combat these stressors, providing your skin with the protection it needs to remain healthy and radiant.
Blue Light Exposure: Prolonged exposure to blue light from digital devices can lead to oxidative stress in the skin, contributing to premature aging and weakening of the skin's surface.
Pollution: Particles and chemicals in polluted air can penetrate the skin, leading to inflammation, dehydration, and a breakdown of collagen, which keeps skin firm and youthful.
UV Radiation: While not a new concern, the effects of UV radiation on the skin, including sunburn, photoaging, and an increased risk of skin cancer, are well-documented and continue to be a significant concern for skin health.
Standard Self Care leverages bioactive ingredients known for their protective qualities against these stressors. For instance, antioxidants like Vitamin C, found in Kakadu Plum, combat oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals. Ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid and Squalane reinforce the skin's natural barrier, keeping it hydrated and more resilient against environmental pollutants.
To shield your skin from these stressors, incorporating products that offer both correction and protection is crucial. Here's how Standard Self Care can fortify your skincare routine:
Morning: After cleansing, apply a product rich in antioxidants, like a serum containing Kakadu Plum, to fight off free radical damage throughout the day. Follow up with a moisturizer that includes Hyaluronic Acid to lock in hydration and strengthen the skin barrier. Always finish with SPF to protect against UV radiation.
Evening: Double cleanse to remove pollutants and makeup thoroughly. Use products with reparative ingredients like Omega+ Complex to nourish and repair the skin overnight. A dedicated eye cream can help mitigate the effects of blue light exposure around the delicate eye area.
In addition to skincare, small lifestyle changes can significantly impact your skin's health:
In the fight against digital and environmental stressors, proactive skincare and lifestyle choices are key. By incorporating Standard Self Care's bioactive, protective products into your daily routine, you can help shield your skin from these modern-day challenges, ensuring it remains healthy, resilient, and radiant. Remember, skincare is not just about addressing current concerns; it's about preventing future damage and preserving the health of your skin for years to come

But its benefits extend beyond just moisturization. HA helps to reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles, creating a plumper, more youthful complexion. By enhancing the skin's barrier layer, it improves skin health, allowing it to defend against pollution and other environmental stressors more effectively.
The Kakadu Plum is recognized as one of the richest sources of Vitamin C, containing up to 100 times the Vitamin C content found in oranges. This superfruit enhances the skin's ability to fight oxidative stress, boosts collagen production, and improves skin texture and brightness. The Vitamin C in Kakadu Plum works synergistically with HA, facilitating its penetration into the skin to amplify hydration and antioxidant protection.

]]>Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in our skin that has the remarkable ability to attract and hold vast amounts of moisture—up to 1,000 times its weight in water. This makes it an invaluable ingredient in moisturizers, serums, and other skincare products designed to hydrate and plump the skin from within. However, as we age, the natural levels of HA in our skin decrease, necessitating the need for topical supplementation to maintain its hydration and elasticity.
The primary benefit of HA moisturizers lies in their ability to significantly boost skin's moisture content, leading to an immediate plumping effect that can diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Regular use of HA-enhanced products can also enhance skin's elasticity and barrier function, protecting against environmental aggressors and preventing moisture loss. Furthermore, HA's lightweight, non-comedogenic nature makes it suitable for all skin types, from dry to oily, ensuring everyone can reap its hydrating benefits without the risk of clogged pores or breakouts.
When selecting a hyaluronic acid moisturizer, consider the molecular weight of HA used in the formula. Products featuring a mix of low, medium, and high molecular weight HA can offer multi-depth hydration, targeting different layers of the skin for comprehensive moisturizing. Additionally, look for products that pair HA with complementary ingredients like vitamin B5 (panthenol), which enhances hydration and skin softness, or antioxidants like vitamin C, to protect against free radical damage while boosting HA's effectiveness.
To maximize the benefits of hyaluronic acid in your skincare routine, start by applying an HA serum or moisturizer to damp skin. This enhances HA's ability to draw moisture into the skin. Follow with a quality moisturizer to seal in hydration and finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day to protect your newly hydrated skin from UV damage. For those with dry skin, consider using an HA-based product both morning and night to maintain optimal hydration levels.
The inclusion of hyaluronic acid moisturizers in your skincare routine can dramatically improve your skin's hydration, elasticity, and overall appearance. Its ability to attract and retain moisture makes HA an indispensable ally in the fight against aging, offering a simple yet effective solution for anyone looking to maintain a youthful, dewy complexion. As skincare science advances, the importance of hydration remains constant, and hyaluronic acid stands out as a key ingredient in achieving and maintaining healthy, vibrant skin.
]]>Vegan skincare products offer a plethora of benefits, both for the skin and the environment. By eschewing animal-derived ingredients, these products reduce the demand for animal farming, which is often associated with high carbon emissions and other environmental impacts. Furthermore, vegan skincare formulations tend to focus on plant-based ingredients that are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. These natural compounds are known for their efficacy in combating the signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity, providing a gentle yet effective solution for maintaining youthful skin.
Several plant-based ingredients stand out for their anti-aging properties. Squalane, derived from olives, mirrors the skin's natural oils, providing deep moisturization without clogging pores. Bakuchiol, often touted as a natural alternative to retinol, offers similar benefits in reducing fine lines and improving skin texture, without the irritation commonly associated with retinol. Aloe vera, known for its soothing properties, also helps to hydrate and firm the skin, reducing the appearance of early signs of aging. These ingredients, among others, are what make vegan skincare products not just ethical, but also powerfully effective.
Creating a vegan skincare routine doesn’t have to be complicated. The key is to look for products that contain high concentrations of the aforementioned ingredients, ensuring that they can deliver tangible anti-aging benefits. Start with a gentle cleanser to remove impurities, followed by a toner to balance the skin's pH. Apply a serum enriched with antioxidants to protect against environmental damage, then use a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid or squalane to lock in hydration. Finally, never forget sunscreen, the most critical step in preventing premature aging from UV exposure.
Several brands have made a name for themselves in the realm of vegan skincare, offering products that are not only effective but also cruelty-free and environmentally friendly. Brands like Youth To The People, The Ordinary, and Pacifica offer a wide range of vegan anti-aging products, from serums to moisturizers, that cater to various skin types and concerns. When selecting products, look for those with transparent ingredient lists and certifications from organizations like Leaping Bunny or Vegan Society to ensure their vegan status and ethical standards.
The rise of vegan skincare represents a shift towards more ethical, sustainable, and conscious beauty practices. By choosing vegan skincare products, especially those targeted at anti-aging, individuals can enjoy the dual benefits of promoting skin health and supporting ethical practices. As the demand for these products grows, it paves the way for more innovations in the beauty industry, making vegan skincare a powerful tool in the quest for youthful, radiant skin, without compromising on one's values.
]]>The eye area presents unique challenges in skincare. The skin here is significantly thinner than the rest of the face, which not only makes it more delicate but also more prone to moisture loss and damage. Dark circles can result from a combination of factors, including genetics, lack of sleep, aging, and even blood flow issues, while puffiness can be attributed to fluid retention, allergies, or lifestyle factors. Traditional moisturizers may be too heavy for this area and can cause milia, small white bumps under the skin. Therefore, eye creams are formulated to be lighter and more absorbent, addressing these specific concerns without overwhelming the skin.
When shopping for an anti-aging eye cream, the ingredient list holds the key to effectiveness. Here are some powerhouse ingredients to look for:
Selecting the right eye cream can be daunting, but focusing on products with the above ingredients can narrow down your options. Here are a few recommendations:
For Dark Circles: Look for an eye cream with caffeine and niacinamide. These ingredients can help reduce pigmentation and puffiness, making the under-eye area appear brighter and more refreshed.
For Fine Lines: An eye cream with retinol or peptides will stimulate collagen production, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time.
For Dryness: A formula rich in hyaluronic acid or glycerin will hydrate and plump the skin, diminishing the look of crepey skin and fine lines.
Remember, the efficacy of an eye cream is not solely dependent on its ingredients but also on its application. Apply your eye cream gently using your ring finger, as this exerts the least amount of pressure, and pat it along the orbital bone from the inner to the outer corners of the eye area.
Incorporating a targeted eye cream into your skincare routine is essential for combating the signs of aging around the eyes. By understanding the unique challenges of the eye area and selecting products with the right ingredients, you can maintain a youthful and vibrant look. Remember, the key to seeing results is consistency and patience. With the right care, your eyes can remain a timeless feature that defies the years.
]]>Aging is a natural process characterized by the gradual decline in the skin's structural integrity and function. Collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for skin's firmness and elasticity, diminish over time, leading to wrinkles and sagging. Furthermore, our skin's ability to retain moisture decreases, causing dryness and a lackluster appearance. External factors such as UV exposure, pollution, and lifestyle choices (like smoking and poor diet) can accelerate these changes.
A potent anti-aging skincare regimen is grounded in science-backed ingredients known for their efficacy. Here are the superheroes of anti-aging skincare:
An effective anti-aging skincare routine incorporates several steps, each aimed at addressing different aspects of the aging process:
Embarking on an anti-aging skincare regimen is a journey that requires patience, consistency, and the right products. By understanding the aging process and incorporating key ingredients into your routine, you can significantly improve your skin's appearance and health. Remember, it's never too early or too late to start caring for your skin. With dedication and the right approach, youthful, radiant skin is within reach.

AND THEY'RE ACTUALLY HARMING YOUR SKIN..
A lot of skincare brands claim that their products are 'clean', or 'natural'. But with so many factors that go towards making a truly clean product, it's rare to find a collection that ticks all the boxes. Here's what 'clean' means to Standard Self Care, and why each factor is so important if you want to finally find a routine that works for your skin:
1/ NON-GMO
GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) are organisms whose genes have been artificially altered to modify their characteristics. In skincare, this is usually GMO plants that ingredients are then derived from. Using GMO-derived cosmetics has consistently been shown to be harmful to the human body, especially with the additional pesticides needed to grow the GMO plants, so it's definitely a factor to keep in mind when choosing skincare products. Despite this, most brands don't actually test for GMOs in their ingredients because of the high testing costs. But this is a factor we take seriously- all of our ingredients are Non-GMO.
2/ NO SILICONES
Silicones are a semi-liquid substance, derived from something called Silica. There are numerous forms of silicones used in skincare products, most commonly cyclopentasiloxane (pronunciation not required!). Silicones repel water, meaning they don't rinse away easily and contribute to blocked pores and therefore acne. They also contribute to breakouts in another way: they're occlusive, meaning they act as a barrier. This can be good for keeping environmental aggressors out, but not so great as they can trap oil and dirt in. If those two weren't enough, silicones are also bioaccumulative- taking hundreds of years to break down once flushed down your sink. That's the main reason we decided to opt-out of them when formulating our collection. Silicones are definitely something to be mindful of!
3/ NO ARTIFICIAL FRAGRANCES
An artificial fragrance is one composed of materials which are man made, with some having up to 200 ingredients. Artificial fragrance is a leading cause of both contact dermatitis (like rashes), and allergic reactions caused by cosmetics. However, the FDA considers fragrance a "trade secret", so brands that artificially scent their products can simply add 'fragrance', or 'perfume' to the end of an ingredient label instead of listing the raw ingredients, creating a dangerous Trojan horse. We believe in transparency in this area, and because of that opted for no artificial fragrances in our products.
4/ NO SYNTHETIC CHEMICALS
Although not all synthetic cosmetic ingredients are the same (some are not as harmful as others), there are many that have been found to be toxic, accumulate in the body over time and have been linked to many different skin irritations, and even cancers- a big reason for us going with no synthetic chemicals in our formulations. Another thing to consider is that many of these types of ingredients are subject to limitations in their testing, especially when it comes to testing how they'll interact with other ingredients in your skincare routine from different products.
5/ PARABEN FREE
Parabens are a type of chemical preservative that have been used in beauty products since the 1920s. Their only purpose is to increase the shelf life of products (to reduce costs for the company), at the expense of many long-term negative health effects, like: interfering with hormones and acting as an endocrine disruptor; contribution to breast cancer and skin irritation. Things that you definitely don't want from your skincare routine.
6/ 3RD PARTY ISO ACCREDITED TESTED
ISO Accredited testing tests the ingredients in a skincare product for things such as heavy metals, Phthalates and molds. Heavy metals accumulate in the body and can cause not just skin irritation, but also neurotoxicity problems for the brain. Phthalates are known endocrine disruptors, meaning that they can interfere with your hormone production and regulation. Serious issues- which is why we have our ingredients tested to check for these before using them in our products.

Our co-founder Hannah recently sat down with Route to chat about everything Standard Self Care, including how and why she started the brand, what's on her "this or that" list, and also gave a 'dupe test' to check how well she knew our products. Watch below!

There's so much information out there when it comes to the 'rules' of skincare. Your favorite influencer is telling you to do one thing.. your friend told you that something else worked better for her.. and then you're told something different again on a YouTube video.
It's difficult to know what to believe, and what to ignore.
A good starting point is actually on the other side - understanding the common mistakes that'll hold you back from glowing skin, and knowing how to avoid them.
Here's 6 to keep an eye out for.
1/ INCONSISTENCY IN YOUR ROUTINE
One of the worst skincare mistakes is cherry picking products and applying them once or twice, and not consistently as part of a routine. Most products take time before you see changes in your skin, and therefore require you to stick with them for a month or two. Once you've found products that work well for your skin.. leave your routine alone!
2/ YOU'RE SKIPPING SPF
Skipping this is one of the biggest skincare mistakes you can make. Even on rainy or cloudy days, you still need to wear your SPF. Skipping this step can have damaging results- UV rays accelerate aging in your skin, and can bring about collagen breakdown. Two things to definitely avoid if you want that youthful, radiant glow.
3/ YOU'RE NOT DOUBLE CLEANSING
If you're currently only cleansing with a water-based cleanser, you're missing out on an entire level of skin hydration. Double cleansing is using a hydrating cleansing balm before your typical water-based cleanser.. this gives you an even deeper cleanse and nourishment- it might just be what your skin needs. Our Hydrating Omega+ Cleansing Balm is perfect for double cleansing.
Hydrating Omega+ Cleansing Balm
4/ APPLYING PRODUCTS IN THE WRONG ORDER
The order in which you apply the products in your skincare routine makes a big difference, especially with additional products like eye cream. It's a very common skincare mistake that gets made. We recommend putting this on before you apply any face creams or moisturizers, as your under-eye skin is more delicate than the rest of your face. Another good example of this rule is for serums. They should once again be applied before any face creams or moisturizers. In other words, the thinnest, highest concentration products should go on the skin first.
5/ EXFOLIATING TOO OFTEN
Exfoliating helps increase cell turnover to bring fresh cells to the surface, but daily exfoliation may irritate your skin. Start by exfoliating a couple of times per week and increase if needed. A good way to further split this up could be with an all-over exfoliate once per week, and then a focus on rough, textured problem areas on the other day.
6/ SLEEPING WITH MAKEUP ON
Even when you're super tired and can't wait to crawl into bed, you should always remove your makeup before sleeping. If you go to bed without removing your makeup, your pores can become clogged, allowing acne-causing bacteria to build up. Your blocked skin will also have a more difficult time absorbing skincare ingredients! Make sure to develop a nightly skincare routine that involves first cleansing the skin of all makeup and debris.

Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids help to flush inflammation from your skin and body, and also regulate your skin's oil production- two things that can massively help with breakouts. Omega-3 fatty acids also help to maintain the skin's natural moisture barrier, giving you that naturally dewy look. They also actually support the production of collagen in the skin- the protein that gives your skin its youthfulness and elasticity.
